Pink Tourmaline: The Stone of Creative Inspiration

The Stone of Creative Inspiration

October’s very own birthstone, pink tourmaline, is a gem that dazzles in more colors than any other naturally occurring gemstone. It comes from the Sinhalese word toramalli, meaning “stone with mixed colors” and is perfect for celebrating not only October babes, but also eighth year anniversaries.

History of Tourmaline

Tourmaline takes on other hues so well, that its identity is often mistaken. In the 1500s, a Spanish conquistador confused green tourmaline for what he thought to be emerald. In another case, “Caesar’s Ruby,” - a Russian crown jewel - is actually a red tourmaline “rubellite.” This misidentification continued into the 1800s until scientists finally recognized tourmaline as a distinct mineral species.

Tourmaline is the most commonly mined in Brazil. For centuries, kaleidoscope colors created by intrusive magma deposits were found in the southeastern state of Minas Gerais. Vibrant green, blue, and violet tourmaline flooded the market in the 80s due to traces of copper deposits in Paraiba Brazil.

California experienced a commercial tourmaline mining peak from 1902 to 1910 during the Qing dynasty. 120 tons of red rubellite was sent to Imperial China from San Diego to satisfy Empress Dowager Cixi’s obsession with the color!

Chemical and Mystical Properties

Legend has it tourmaline stones travel along with rainbows and collect every color along the way. Tourmalines naturally come in more colors than any other stone. This is why ancient mystics turned to tourmaline to inspire creative expression.

Each color is said to have different healing properties. Black tourmaline might make the wearer feel more protected, shielded, and self-confident. Keep green tourmaline close to encourage stamina, courage, and strength. Those who need reminding to be gentle, compassionate, and loving may want to wear an Olive Birthstone Charm or Baby Ring Birthstone Charm in Pink Tourmaline. And that would make our Olive Single Stone Bracelet in Pink Tourmaline the perfect luxury accessory to inspire new ideas for your next project.
