Happy Earth Day! While we may not currently be able to fully celebrate our Mother Earth due to Safer-at-Home orders, we are still showing our love and care for the planet today. Here are some ways we keep our small business environmentally friendly.
Our sustainability efforts go hand in hand with the core values here at Starling: Quality, Individuality, and Connection. Our materials have always been mindfully sourced. We start with castings made from found metal, and only buy the gems we need in order to create less waste. We also cut down on shipping and production waste by being based 100% in Downtown Los Angeles. Our jewelry and studio teams personally develop every piece we make, from start to finish. Keeping it local is not just a sustainable practice, but is also a way of supporting our fellow Angelinos.
Our founder Chelsey, a certified gemologist, founded Starling with the mission that each piece we create is custom to you. We carefully make each piece individually, from metal selections, to stone options, to lengths and sizes— so all of our pieces are 1-of-1, and all crafted by hand. We don't mass produce our jewelry—we keep it as custom and personalized as possible, which also lowers our environmental impact.
In our studio, we make it a goal each year to be more and more sustainable. As an ecommerce business, we are always looking for new ways to cut down on packaging and other single use items.
We limit single use plastic by reusing and repurposing non-recyclables in every way we can. Our recyclable wrapping paper is from the company noissue, an amazing paper goods supplier that plants a tree for every order placed. The boxes and velvet bags we send our jewelry in, well, we urge you all to keep for safe storage of your pieces

We take pride in these efforts, and strive to discover more ways we can practice sustainability in our small business, and in our daily lives.
