ELIZABETH MATHIS of The Cool Mom Co

A keepsake is something that you cherish, a piece that you love and reminds you of the ones you love.

Actress, Model, Lifestyle/Parenting Blogger, and Mom extraordinaire, Elizabeth Mathis is a quadruple threat. We first meet Elizabeth last year at an Au Fudge event and immediately wanted to be her best friend! She's funny, down-to-earth, and balances a busy life with a smile. Elizabeth was a natural pick for our first collaborative jewelry effort. She has an easy-going, minimal style that's never boring. We are so excited about our Valentine's Day ring collab, but first a peek into her personal jewel box. Full of romance, good luck chains, and the sweet reason she's waiting to get her second and third holes pierced.

WHAT DOES “KEEPSAKE” MEAN TO YOU? WHAT PIECE OF JEWELRY COMES TO MIND WHEN YOU THINK OF KEEPSAKES?

A keepsake is something that you cherish, a piece that you love, and reminds you of the ones you love.  I have a necklace that my husband gave me after having my oldest daughter.  It is a chain with her initial on it.  It broke recently and I almost cried.

FIRST JEWELRY MEMORY?

I was introduced to jewelry by my mom.  She always wore this beautiful yellow gold ring with diamonds in the shape of a zig-zag.  I grew up thinking it was the most beautiful piece of jewelry I had ever seen.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE IN YOUR JEWELRY BOX?

My engagement ring! Even though I never wear it, because it’s gets stuck in my hair I love it! The night my husband proposed, he surprised me with a really nice dinner. We were living in New York City at the time so I was dressed all cute girl, downtown fancy and he surprised me and took me to an uptown fancy place. I probably wasn’t appropriately dressed but it was such a nice surprise. We had the most amazing meal ever, minus the 30 mins I was alone while he pretended he was in the bathroom (he was really prepping for the proposal). Afterward, he took me on a romantic walk near Gramercy Park and proposed under a light post down on one knee!  I’ll never forget how nervous and excited I was!

ANY JEWELRY SUPERSTITIONS OR RITUALS?

No superstitions, but if I want good luck I wear my grandmother’s chain. She wore it every day and when she passed it was given to me. I also have a collection of Saint charms she collected hanging in my girls, Nyla and Nimah’s, room for good luck but they are never allowed to touch.

WHAT ARE YOUR EVERYDAY PIECES OF JEWELRY?

My solid wedding band, a diamond band that was my 1st wedding anniversary present from my husband, my gold Starling bands, usually diamond studs and an engraved bar necklace that says EMXO (my brand initials).

ANY FAVORITE ANTIQUE PIECES?

My oldest piece is from my mom.  It is a beautiful yellow gold ring with an opal in the center.  She gave it to me when I turned 16 and it was given to her by her mom at 16.  Of course, I will give it to my daughter when she turns 16 as well.  I have another family heirloom for my little one, which is a white gold band that branches out like a tree.

WHAT JEWELRY HAVE YOU BOUGHT RECENTLY?

My Starling rings! These thin little gold bands that I had been searching for forever and wear every day now

HOW MANY JEWELRY BOXES DO YOU OWN?

I have a few jewelry boxes but I never use them.  I keep all my favorite pieces on a pretty plate on my bedside table.  It makes getting to them so much faster in the mornings.

FAVORITE STARLING DESIGN?

I am a little biased because I helped design it but the XO ring of course!! I love it!  It was everything I wanted it to be!

TELL US THE STORY OF GETTING YOUR EARS PIERCED!

Actually, I don’t remember so it wasn’t that traumatic. Of course, my mom might tell a different story, though. When Nyla and Nimah each turn 5, that’s considered big girl status and they can get their ears pierced.  As a bonding moment, I want to get my second and third holes pierced when they get their first.

Thanks, Lizzy!!

xoxo
